About

Heroic Yarns started out as a hobby making geek-inspired latch hooks for charity.  But after taking in a dog who likes to chew on yarn and canvas, it made that particular hobby fairly impossible.  Now, Heroic Yarns focuses on using comic books to help support animal shelters and rescues.

MISSION

Our mission is to use the power of storytelling and the small press to support animal shelters and rescue groups in their ongoing work of rescuing animals and educating the public on animal welfare issues.

VISION

Our vision is to create entertaining stories and publications tailored to each animal welfare organization’s specific needs to use for fundraising, education and outreach.

VALUES

When it comes to animal welfare and artistic freedom, we recognize that there are a wide variety of views that folks feel strongly about. Y’all might not necessarily agree with everything listed, and that’s okay, it just means it’s room for a healthy discussion about them so we can continue to make things better!

We also recognize that values can change as we learn and grow, so we will not hold fast to any value merely for the sake of being “right”.

Humans are responsible for the basic necessities of food, water, shelter, medical care and kindness for any animal in their care.

Thorough education on the realities of pet ownership and access to convenient and affordable training and medical care is vital to ensuring permanent, loving homes.

Access to convenient and affordable spay and neuter procedures both for animal welfare organizations and pet owners is an absolute necessity to curb pet overpopulation.

Open-intake shelters are a necessity in all communities to avoid pets being abandoned in unsafe environments and to provide a safety net for those who rescue strays but don’t have the means to house or care for them.

Humane euthanasia is a sad reality due to pet overpopulation. Shelters and shelter workers who engage in this unenviable task should not be demonized.

While this may not always be feasible, companion animals should be indoor pets and not allowed to roam outside unsupervised both due to the risk of harm to themselves and the devastating effects they can have on local wildlife.

We respect responsible breeders but will always encourage adoption from shelters and rescue groups as a first option.

We wholeheartedly support ethically-run wildlife rehabs, sanctuaries, preserves and zoos, but do not believe that wild animals should be imported, exploited or owned for the sole purpose of entertainment, commerce or novelty.

Artists should be fairly compensated for their work in a timely manner.

AI should not be used in place of human artists.
